BBL (Brazilian Batida Lift)

Brazilian Batida is a cachaça-based cocktail usually mixed with passionfruit, coconut milk, lime, and condensed milk. BBL reintroduces the grassy notes normally provided by cachaça by replacing the alcoholic sugarcane spirit with yerba mate, a highly caffeinated Brazilian ingredient with grassy notes of its own.
Serve on ice with a milk and a sweetener of your choice, or preferably with sweetened condensed milk.
Historical and Cultural Context:
During the transatlantic slave trade, Brazil was the largest recipient of enslaved African people, and today, over half of Brazil identifies as Black or mixed-race. Samba music was created by African diaspora communities in Brazil, as was capoeira, an art that is part dance and part martial art. For almost 200 years, African labor made Brazil the world's largest producer of sugar. Naturally, Brazil made cachaça - Brazil’s national alcoholic beverage - a spirit made from sugarcane. Batida is a cocktail originating in Brazil featuring cachaça. In Portuguese, the word batida means "beaten" or "shaken", referring to the mixing of the ingredients, often with a blender.
